After twelve years as head of BMW Motorsport, Mario Theissen is taking a well deserved retirement. He was the architect of the victory of the Munich manufacturer at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1999.

"Whether in Formula 1, Endurance, in tourism or in the detection of young drivers, BMW has achieved success in all major disciplines under the direction of Mario Theissen." A tribute made by Klaus Draeger, BMW board member, of one who has spent a total of more than three decades in the service of the Bavarian marque. "I really loved my 34 years at BMW", said Mario Theissen, who was replaced on 1 July by Jens Marquardt. "For me, the racing has been the culmination of everything that happened before. Very short time, steps forward and backward in time a fortnight, triumphs, disappointments - all in the public eye. During this period I met many interesting people, some of which have become very good friends. I must also thank my colleagues. Their tireless efforts have enabled BMW to attend regular podiums and write new chapters of motorsport. "

Among the list of victories is that of the BMW V12 LMR prototype that won at Le Mans in 1999, driven by the Frenchman Yannick Dalmas, Italian Pierluigi Martini and German Joachim Winkelhock. And today, BMW is the leader in LM GTE Pro Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, whose fourth round will take place on the 3rd July in Italy, as part of six hours Imola. The two M3 entered in Italy took the third (Dirk Werner / Pedro Lamy, No. 56) and fourth (Augusto Farfus / Jörg Müller, No. 55) fastest times of the first free practice session.
