Carlos Tavares (Peugeot - Citroën): “The standard in ELMS is astonishing”

Carlos Tavares recently raced at the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the fifth round of the European Le Mans Series. The boss of PSA Peugeot Citroën told us what he thought of his first time racing the Ligier JS P3.

What do you think of the LM P3 that you drove at Spa-Francorchamps?

“I usually drive a Lola T70 with a 550 hp V8 engine in classic car races. It’s the exact opposite of the LM P3. The Ligier JS P3 has superb aerodynamics but not so much power. The faster the corners, the more exciting it is to take them flat out. The slower the corners, the less grip you have and it’s more like a traditional car. Thanks to its aerodynamics, the Ligier JS P3 has fabulous lateral grip. All in all, it’s a tremendous car.”

Had you been keen to race a modern prototype for a while?

“Yes, absolutely. When Jacques Nicolet suggested I take part in the race, I immediately accepted. And my codriver [Erik Maris] is a fun guy and a fast driver.”

Will you find the time to do a full season?

“Since I’ve been at the head of PSA, I’ve done about 20 races a year, which is the equivalent of two championships - and I tag on a few other races too. So that wouldn’t be a problem. The most important thing is to have a good team. I haven’t got the means to do an ELMS season, but if the opportunity arose, then I would consider it.”

What does motorsport mean to you?

“Motorsport is more than a hobby; it’s a passion. I’ve had the bug for 35 years now. I began racing in 1980 and have never stopped. Nowadays, I’m more interested in endurance because as you get older, longer races are better than pushing yourself to the limit in a sprint. And there’s a great feeling of togetherness. I’ve done the 24 Hours of Barcelona before. A 24-hour race is fraught with emotion and team spirit is so important.”

What do you think of the ELMS paddock?

“The standard is astonishing. Drivers and teams are excellent. I can see that when LM P2s or even LM P3s overtake me. Actually, I think the standard of LM P2 in the European Le Mans Series is higher than in the World Endurance Championship.”
