In LM P2, three teams were wrangling for the title: Jota Sport, Greaves Motorsport and Thiriet by TDS Racing. While victory at Estoril went to the French team , mainly due to a fine performance by Nicolas Lapierre, Greaves Motorsport finished top of the final standings. With two wins this year, at Silverstone and Paul Ricard, the #41 Gibson 015S became ELMS LM P2 champion, while Gary Hirsch, Bjorn Wirdheim and Jon Lancaster took the drivers’ title. The LM P2 championship has been a tightly fought battle all year as the final results show, with 93 points for Greaves Motorsport, just two points ahead of Thiriet by TDS Racing (91) and four in front of Jota Sport (89)!
Team LNT and its two Ginetta Nissans met with less resistance in LM P3. They took the team title while Charlie Robertson and Sir Chris Hoy, six-time Olympic gold medallist, had already secured their crown at Paul Ricard with a round to spare.
There was also plenty of excitement in the LM GTE class. The BMW Z4 fielded by BMW Team Marc VDS (Jesse Krohn, Henry Hassid and Andy Priaulx) grabbed its first win of the season, which turned out to be a fitting parting gift for the Belgian outfit which has decided to focus on motorcycle racing in 2016. In the championship however, the titles went to the #60 Ferrari F458 from Formula Racing and its drivers Johnny Laursen, Mikkel Mac and Andrea Rizzoli.
Finally, the GTC class was dominated by the BMW Z4 fielded by TDS Racing. With two victories under their belt (Silverstone et Paul Ricard), Eric Dermont, Dino Lunardi and Franck Perera have excelled throughout the championship. This is the second ELMS title for TDS Racing after the LM P2 crown in 2012.
Of course, one of the main goals for all of these teams was an invitation to next year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. Greaves Motorsport (in LM P2), Team LNT (in LM P2), Formula Racing (in LM GTE) and TDS Racing (in LM GTE Am) have therefore all earned their automatic Le Mans entry, much to the delight of the teams as TDS Racing driver Franck Perera confirms: “I’ve had a few highlights in my career but the 24 Hours of Le Mans is a dream come true! There’s now a lot of work to be done with the new car in GTE, but it’s what we wanted.”
Tickets for the 2016 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (18 and 19 June) will be on sale from Tuesday 3 November (ACO members) and Friday 6 November (general public).
