ELMS - Julien Canal (Ligier): "The JS P217 is a true racing car."

Julien Canal competed in the European Le Mans Series this year in the #41 Ligier JS P2 entered by Greaves Motorsport. The Le Mans native is also one of the driver-developers of the new Ligier LM P2 called the JS P217. Here is a brief overview…

Looking back at the 2016 season: "I am disappointed with my season. On paper, it was perfect to integrate the ELMS defending champion team. Now, don't forget they have acquired a new chassis (Greaves Motorsports entered a Gibson 015S Nissan last year, Ed.), the one with which I won the FIA Endurance LM P2 Driver Trophy in the World Endurance Championship last year. The Ligier JS P2s won races this season in the FIA WEC, but not in the ELMS. It's never easy for a team to take on a new car. The team perhaps didn't test out the car enough or look for additional technical solutions. Even though I know the JS P2 well, communication with Onroak Automotive is good, we lack some groundwork and technical work."

"As for me, I learned how to work with a British team, I had never raced with a foreign team. I made a lot of progress this year first in terms of English (laughs), then on the technical side. I had to be more focused on the technical aspects to share with them what I knew about the car, so I got more involved. I also grew as a driver because we often started pretty far back on the starting grid."

The 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans: "It was complicated. We knew the Ligier JS P2s would fare better on winding circuits with big curves. The Orecas were quite fast this year. It was definitely a great disappointment. We didn't make any mistakes and did good work. I also got to know two teammates, Memo Rojas and Nathanaël Berthon, who are good drivers as well as real friends."

The 2017 season: "I am really focused on the two championships, the European Le Mans Series and the World Endurance Championship. My first objective is to claim podium finishes, not fifth and sixth places! So I am looking for a team I get along well with and who can reach the podium. I am trying to increase my budget with new sponsors. I have contacts with quite a few teams, there are a lot of things in the works, but it's too early to say anything. Onroak Automotive, with whom I took part in the development of the new Ligier JS P217, is also pushing to find me a place with this car. In any case, it will be in one of the two championships."

The new Ligier JS P217: "The car is truly well conceived. We did some night testing at Magny-Cours and Portimao (Portugal, Ed.). I did 100 laps without any problems the very first day. We tested several mechanical and aerodynamic options. It's a new car, with an additional 100 hp, better aerodynamic grip, so it's faster everywhere. We are thrilled with the first test sessions, but I think the other marques' car will be strong as well. We are the first to come out with an LM P2 compliant with the 2017 regulations. In terms of reliability and development, we are confident we will continue to make progress with more sessions. That's important to me, it's gratifying and let's me up my game, teaches me to work with a professional team. As a Silver driver, they trust my instincts, even though sometimes it takes me a second longer than someone like Olivier Pla. They are trying to see if the JS P217 could correspond to a car driven by everyone. All the knowledge of Pipo Derani, Olivier Pla, Felipe Albuquerque, soon Bruno Senna, and me will move this car forward fast."

A big difference compared to the 2016 LM P2: "To me, the difference is striking, we've gone to the next level. We're already a few seconds faster than the Ligier JS P2. The cars will be two to three seconds faster, not to mention the 24 Hours of Le Mans where we'll be between four to six seconds faster. With the fastest car in the straights, one must be more focused, more precise and it's physically harder to drive. For amateur drivers it'll be a good thing because they won't have to concern themselves with the GTs they'll overtake more easily. It's positive in terms of safety. On the other hand, to push the car to the max will not be easy for them. Anyway, it's very exciting to drive this car, it's a true racing car."
