The weather in Portugal played a major role in the outcome of this 4 Hours of Algarve, with heavy downpours causing several safety car deployments. Under the chequered flag, two teams won 2023 ELMS titles ahead of the final round of the season, the 4 Hours of Portimão, this coming Sunday.
After starting sixth on the grid, United Autosports USA's #22 ORECA 07-Gibson driven by Marino Sato/Phil Hanson/Oliver Jarvis triumphed over Algarve Pro Racing's #25 ORECA 07-Gibson. The Portuguese team's second place earned it the 2023 ELMS title, and now it's looking to clinch the Drivers trophy on Sunday. Kyffin Simpson/James Allen/Alexander Lynn currently possess a 20-point lead on United Autosports USA's crew.
COOL Racing's #37 ORECA reached the top step on the LMP2 Pro/Am podium. Malthe Jakobsen beat out Mathias Beche driving Nielsen Racing's #24 ORECA after the Swiss driver incurred a 10-second penalty for causing contact with the third-place finisher, AF Corse's #83 ORECA. The result places the #83's driver line-up at the top of the championship standings with a two-point lead on Racing Team Turkey.
Title-Winner COOL Racing
WTM by Rinaldi Racing's #12 Duqueine won the 4 Hours of Algarve in the LMP3 class, while COOL Racing's #17 Ligier secured the 2023 ELMS crown for the second year in a row thanks to Adrien Chila/Alejandro Garcia/Marcos Siebert.
The win in LMGTE (the class' penultimate race in the European Le Mans Series) went to Proton Competition's #77 Porsche 911 RSR-19. Christian Ried scored his 11th victory in the class since 2011 and now matches Matt Griffin, driver of Spirit of Race's #55 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo. Julian Andlauer delivered a battle for the ages against Alessio Picariello driving Proton Competition's #15 Porsche and title-contender Iron Lynx's #60 Porsche rounded out the top 3.
