European Le Mans Series – An outstanding field for the 2021 season

The list of 2021 European Le Mans Series entrants has been released, with a total of 43 cars competing in the LMP2, LMP3 and LMGTE classes at six different circuits.

The LMP2 class boasts the most international field of all with 16 cars including 14 ORECA 07-Gibsons and two Aurus 01-Gibsons. The 2020 defending champion, United Autosports, is expected to enter two cars: the #22 driven by Phil Hanson (2020 ELMS Drivers champion) and Tom Gamble (2020 LMP3 champion), and the #32 for Job van Uitert (2018 LMP3 champion) announced so far. Belgian team Team WRT will join the ELMS with the #41 ORECA 07-Gibson driven by former F1 and WRC driver Robert Kubica. A new rule has been established for the Pro/Am class as each driver line-up must include at least one Bronze driver. Also competing in the class are DragonSpeed USA, G-Drive Racing, IDEC SPORT Racing, Ultimate, Racing Team Turkey, Cool Racing and Graff.

Fifteen Ligier JS P320-Nissans and two Duqueine M30-D08-Nissans will battle it out in the LMP3 class. United Autosports will field two cars as will Nielsen Racing, Graff and Inter Europol Competition. Eurointernational (2019 champion) and RLR MSport (2018 champion) will both enter just one car. The two Duqueine M30-D08-Nissans belong to DKR Engineering and Racing Experience.

Ten cars are entered in the LMGTE class, the first time since 2014 the bar of 10 competitors has been reached. Three different marques are to be represented: Ferrari (avec seven 488 GTE Evos), Porsche (with two 911 RSR-19s) and Aston Martin (with one Vantage AMR). The defending champion, Proton Competition, will hit the track with the Porsche. Actor Michael Fassbender will take the wheel of the #93 for his second ELMS season. Italian team Iron Lynx will field three Ferrari 488 GTE Evos with Claudio Schiavoni in the #60, Matteo Cressoni in the #80 and Rahel Frey in the #83.

Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest: "Once again this year, the European Le Mans Series entry list is looking good. The six rounds planned this season promise to be thrilling and exciting. In these difficult times, this impressive grid emphasises the appeal of endurance racing and shows that our regulations give to our competitors exactly what they are looking for."

Frédéric Lequien, CEO of the European Le Mans Series: "The European Le Mans Series has become the standard for all continental endurance racing championships. It’s not just about the size of the 2021 grid, there is so much quality as well, in both the driver line-ups and amongst the teams. This makes the challenge of becoming a European Le Mans Series champion an extremely difficult one, but for those who make it to the top, one that is all the more worth winning. Finally, this grid is proof of the success of the endurance racing ladder, giving a clear path up to the FIA World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans."

The season will kick off with official tests on 13 April at the Barcelona circuit, and the first race is set for 18 April at the same track.
