The final free practice session brought with it plenty of dramas, a few mechanical disasters

The final Free Practice Session brought with it plenty of dramas, a few mechanical disasters and right at end some rapid laps from the Audi Sport Team Joest Audi R18 Tdi which saw the #1 Car at the top of the timing sheets.

After a tentative start to the session the Red Flags came out at 17:05 hrs when the #76 IMSA Performance Matmut Porsche 911RSR went off at the first Porsche Curve. The driver, Raymond Narac was fine. It took about twenty minutes to clear up the track and repair the tyre wall and then the session resumed. The next drama surrounded the #74 Corvette Racing C6 ZR1 which was smoking around the rear end at Terte Rouge and as it made its way back to the pits it was occasionally catching fire. Luckily the fire subsided as they made their way back to the pits.

At 17:47hrs the #44Extreme Limit AM Paris LMP2 Norma M200 stopped after the Playstation Chicane, the cause? It only had three wheels on it!

The next car to spin was the #62 CRS Racing Ferrari 430 , it hit the wall at Karting
#62 in the wall.

The Aston Martin Racing AMR One #009 went back into it's garage around 18:45 hrs for an engine change.. this isn't the first time the team have had to change an engine in a hurry and the car was ready to go out in the 2nd session.

As is often the case drivers seem to manage to start putting in their fastest laps right at the end of any session. So it was no surprise when Andre Lotterer driving the #2 Audi Sport Team Joest Audi R18 Tdi put in the fastest lap of 3:28.296 in this session with 30 minutes to go.

Next into the gravel traps was the #88 Team Felbermayr -Proton Porsche 911 RSR with Abdul Al Faisal at the wheel. It was back out again in about ten minutes with Nick Tandy at the wheel

The first of the GTE Pro drivers to get below the 4 minute lap was Augusto Farfus in the BMW Motorsport M3 GT. While back at the front of the field things were very close with just a second covering the top seven cars. Then right at the end of the session Mike Rockenfeller did a 3:27.986 to put the #1 Audi Sport Team Joest at the top of the times just ahead of the #2 Audi, followed by the first of the Peugeots, #9 Team Peugeot Total 308.

So, at the end of this free practice session the honours went to Audi who were 1st and 2nd ahead of the two Peugeots. The leading petrol powered car was the #16 Pescarolo which was 8th.
