Fernando Alonso, two-time F1 World Champion (in 2005 and 2006), finished fifth at the Australian F1 Grand Prix, the first round of the year. In 10th position on the starting grid, he achieved - at the wheel of his McLaren MCL33 now powered by Renault - a positive kickoff of the 2018 season given that he had not crossed the finish line as favorably as fifth place since the 2016 United States Grand Prix at Austin, Texas.
Fernando Alonso cheered on by fans
F1 fans online even voted Alonso "Driver of the Day," a first-time honor in the Spaniard's career.
Remember, Fernando Alonso will make his first official appearance in the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) on Saturday, May 5th at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium at the first round of the season. He will join forces with Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima at the wheel of the #8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid fielded by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, also the case at the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 16th and 17th.
