French astronaut Thomas Pesquet looks in on Le Mans

On 17 November 2016, Thomas Pesquet launched from Baikonur in Kazakhstan aboard the Russian vesssel Soyuz, en route for the International Space Station (ISS). The astronaut is due to return from his mission on 2 June, in plenty of time to attend the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Pesquet's photo of the city of Le Mans, taken from an altitude of 370 Km, includes the iconic motor racing circuit. The beginning of the Mulsanne Straight is clearly distinguishable, as are the grandstands and the Bugatti which hosts the 24 Hours Motos.

The ISS travels at 28,000 kph and orbits earth 16 times a day, covering a distance equal to that between the earth and the moon. Competitors at Le Mans on 17-18 June will "only" be covering 5,000 km in the 24-hour race but they would surely appreciate the encouragements of an astronaut.

So, Thomas, once you're back down to earth, drop in on us for real. We would love to have you at the track to watch the 24 Hours of Le Mans!
