One week after a difficult weekend with Toyota at the WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the Swiss driver is the first to win for the second time during this first FIA Formula E season. This new championship dedicated to electric single-seaters has attracted several players from the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), which makes up practically half of the field.
Having started from pole position, Sébastien Buemi managed to hold onto the lead after the car change set at mid-race, staving off the return of Brazilian driver Lucas di Grassi. The official Audi driver (in endurance as well as in FIA Formula E) had anticipated the stop and was looking to take over the lead from Buemi. But he got got away and won a dominating victory after a race that had included the appearance of the safety car following a pile-up in the first lap. Another big player in this Monaco round was Sam Bird. G-Drive Racing driver in the LM P2 class in the FIA WEC, the Brit finished the race in fourth place, after a battle with Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet for third. Among the other future competitors in the 24 Hours of Le Mans present in the Principality, Nicolas Prost finished sixth, Stéphane Sarrazin seventh, Nick Heidfeld 11th and Karun Chandhok 13th, whereas Loïc Duval and Daniel Abt were forced to retire.
Teammate of Loïc Duval and Oliver Jarvis in the No. 8 Audi R18 e-tron quattro, Lucas di Grassi has kept the lead in the provisional standings. His second win of the season has allowed Buemi to reach third position. After his FIA WEC driver title, he is still in the running for the a second title in the FIA Formula E with only a 10-point deficit behind di Grassi.
