How the Safety Car procedure works

The Safety Car is usually deployed in the case of an accident, the presence of debris or excessively difficult track conditions.  It is withdrawn only when the Race Director, Daniel Poissenot, decides the time is right...

The Race Director is surrounded by video and computer equipment linking him to all around the track, a real nerve centre.  In the case of an accident, he relies on what he can see on the camera monitors from around the circuit.  He can also call on radio or telephone reports from the 1700 marshals "who are my eyes and ears" spread around the track.

He then makes the decision as to whether to deploy the safety car or not, as well as medical intervention when he judges that the situation calls for it.  When he estimates that the danger has passed, he can show the green flag for racing once more.
