Howard Blank: Woodstock, Le Mans and space!

The oldest and respected driver of the 24 Hours has had many interesting experiences!

This year, 42 drivers are taking part in their first 24 Hours of Le Mans. One of them will receive the award for best newcomer "Rookie of the year." Howard Blank has no such ambitions. At 64, the "oldest newcomer of the year" just wants to drive in his first race at Le Mans. An ambitious challenge, knowing that his team-mates are also beginners! But the American is not a man to be easily impressed.

When did you hear of Le Mans for the first time?

Howard Blank, driver of No.54 Ferrari 458 Italia:" I grew up in the suburbs of New York. At that time in America, there were mainly only races on ovals. When I first saw Le Mans, I was immediately fascinated by it as it is so different a circuit. I said to myself, this is real racing."

Was this the time that you decided to come here one day?

"No! I cannot even say it was a dream, because it was completely inaccessible".

And how do you feel to 5 days before the start?
"Great pride. There are three things which I am proud of: for making Woodstock in 1969. To be in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013. And to being one of the first space tourists next year! I have already bought my ticket from Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic)".

What is your goal for the race?
"I approach this challenge with great calm. I will try to stay well focused. I especially want to drive up to my capabilities. The first objective was to take part. That is now reached. The second objective will be to finish. The third will be to be well placed  in the GTE Am class"
