IMSA – After Le Mans, the Ford GT continues its momentum at The Glen

Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, which ran without incident, marked the return of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship after a three-week interruption so certain competitors could race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Just like the 24 Hours, The Glen was dominated by the Ford GT which has now scored the first one-two of its short career. After an opportunistic victory thanks to a remarkable strategy at Lagune Seca, the Ford GT only owes this win to its performance and that of its drivers.

After reaching the third step on the podium in the LM GTE Pro class at Le Mans, this one was in GTLM (the name of the LM GTE Pro class in the American championship) for Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe at Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen in the #67 Ford GT. Starting from the pole thanks to the performance of the Brit (the Australian had to return home to take part in the birth of his second daughter) in qualifying, the pair triumphed in a class in which the top nine finished in the same lap.

The #66 Ford GT driven by Joey Hand and Dirk Müller followed its sister car by three seconds with the #25 BMW M6 driven by Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner right on its heels, and the #4 Corvette C7.R driven by the winners in the LM GTE Pro class at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner in fourth place.

Like Ford in GTLM, Action Express Racing scored a one-two overall with the Corvette DPs driven by champions João Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi (#5) and Duncan Cameron and Eric Curran (# 31): less than two seconds separated the first from the third, Michael Shank Racing’s #60 Ligier JS P2-Honda, ninth in LM P2 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans! With the support of Olivier Pla, official Ford driver in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), John Pew and Ozz Negri, Jr. rounded out the podium, whereas Extreme Speed Motorsports’ #2 Ligier JS P2-Honda, winner at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring, stopped at the edge of the track without warning two hours from the finish.

In GTD, another outfit victorious at the 24 Hours won thanks to Scuderia Corsa, winner in LM GTE Am (the cars in GTD and LM GTE Am do not answer to the same regulations). Nonetheless, only one of the three Le Mans drivers, Jeff Segal supporting Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan, reached the top step on the podium today.

Lastly, in PC, the winner in the LM P2 class at the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans, Starworks Motorsports, crossed the finish line in first place after starting from the pole thanks to Alex Popow and Renger van der Zande.

The next race will be in exactly one week on Sunday, July 10th in Mosport, Ontario.
