IMSA - Extreme Speed Motorsports (Ligier) and Ford in pole position at The Glen

Two weeks after the 84th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will resume this weekend in Watkins Glen, New York at Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, qualifying for which took place today.

In the American championship, each of the four classes is given one 15-minute qualifying session, which no incidents disrupted unlike the second free practice interrupted by a severe incident for the Lamborghini Huracán driven by Lawrence DeGeorge, who was unhurt.

Johannes van Overbeek and Richard Westbrook did well during their respective qualifying sessions clocking the best time. Overbeek has already won at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in Extreme Speed Motorsports' #2 Ligier JS P2-HPD along with Luis Felipe "Pipo" Derani and team owners Scott Sharp and Ed Brown. Brown's three teammates will represent ESM this weekend in the North American Endurance Cup (NAEC), the mini-championship comprised of the four long races (Rolex 24 at Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, 6 Hours of The Glen and Petit Le Mans) within the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The American outfit, also competing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with two cars, finished 11th and 16th in the LM P2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, two spots behind Michael Shank Racing's Ligier JS P2 which will start from third position at The Glen. As for the other NAEC races, head drivers John Pew and Ozz Negri, Jr. will be supported by official Ford driver Olivier Pla in New York. Between the two Ligiers is the #55 Mazda which this weekend is sporting the colours of the winning Mazda 787B at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Ford GT will not have the same livery as the Ford GT40 that won at Le Mans in 1966, but the one it had for its win in the LM GTE Pro class (called GTLM for GT Le Mans in the U.S.) at the 24 Hours two weeks ago. On the other hand, gone are the numbers 68 and 69 from Le Mans, replaced by 66 and 67 from earlier in the season. The #67 will start from the pole thanks to Richard Westbrook who will drive the Ford GT solo after his teammate Ryan Briscoe returned home suddenly to be a part of the birth of his second daughter. After claiming the third step on the podium at the 24 Hours, they will start from the first spot on the starting grid, ahead of RLL's two BMW M6s and the second Ford GT that won at Le Mans.

Lastly, Renger van der Zande and Alex Popow (#8, Starworks Motorsport) will start from the pole in the PC class, and Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis, at the wheel of Stevenson Motorsports' #6 Audi R8 LMS, will do the same in GTD.

The start of the 6 Hours of The Glen will be given on Sunday, July 3rd at 10:10 a.m. (3:10 p.m. in the U.K.). American residents can follow the race on Fox Sports 1, and the official website will show the race in its entirety for all other fans.
