In 2018, the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, sanctioned by the IMSA, will go from three to four classes and two automatic invitations to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in the LM P2 and LM GTE Am classes, will be given to Pro-Am driver line-ups winners of two new trophies.
The Formula Le Mans introduced in the U.S. in 2010 will no longer be authorized effective 2018, so consequently the PC class (Prototype Challenge), reserved for driver line-ups combining professional and amateurs drivers, will disappear. Nonetheless, to reward Pro-Am driver line-ups, two trophies will be created: the Jim Trueman Award for the P class (Prototype) and the Bob Akin Award for the GTD class (GT Daytona). The winners of these two trophies will receive an automatic invitation to the 24 Hours of Le Mans the following year, in LM P2 and LM GTE Am respectively, which demonstrates strong ties between the ACO and the IMSA.
For now, the IMSA has two automatic invitations to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and chooses two teams among the competitors entered in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship to represent the American championship at Le Mans.
