G-Drive Racing gave the 22-year-old Brazilian a seat for the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year and the experience paid off this weekend when he clinched the trophy in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opener, banking the fastest lap on the way.
With such a prestigious win, "Pipo" is well on his way to making a name for himself in endurance racing. He began his career in go-karting in 2003 and worked his way through the ranks: Formula Renault 2.0 NEC, Formula 3 in Germany and the UK followed by Formula 3 Euro Series.
His first taste of endurance racing was in 2014 when Murphy Prototypes signed him for the Le Castellet and Estoril rounds of the European Le Mans Series in LM P2. In 2015, he remained in LM P2 but changed teams, switching from the Oreca 03R Nissan to the G-Drive Racing’s Ligier JS P2 - Nissan for the World Endurance Championship. He won the class at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and finished the season in third place in the drivers’ contest. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans he and co-drivers Gustavo Yacaman and Ricardi Gonzalez finished fourth in LM P2 and twelfth overall.
This winter Derani announced that he would be joining Extreme Speed Motorsports for the full 2016 World Endurance Championship season. In the meantime, he made a detour via Daytona and no doubt doesn’t regret the ride.
