Though the amount of non-French marshals has slightly decreased since 2012 after peaking at 22%, at the 84th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans it still held at 17.5%, with strong contingents from Belgium, the U.K. and the Netherlands.

The language barrier doesn't seem to present a problem as more and more marshals are coming from Italy, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Since Tom Kristensen - nine-time winner at Le Mans - hung up his helmet, volunteers from Denmark have indeed dwindled.

With the exception of Denmark however, the presence (or lack thereof) of drivers of any certain nationality does not seem to affect the participation of marshals from that country. For example, though there were no Hungarian drivers at the start, three marshals from Hungary were on-site last year, just like the Ukraine with one representative.

Lastly, though European representation is the large majority with 268 marshals of 277 foreigners, some don't mind crossing an ocean for the opportunity. The U.S. and Canada, with five and two volunteers respectively, are still at the top of the list, but as of this year, South Korea and Australia each count one marshal.

Echoing the starting grid of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an increasing number of nationalities are represented among the volunteer marshals - and the 85th edition on June 17th and 18th will be no exception!
