Jenson Button, ‘ichiban’ at the 6 Hours of Fuji?

Jenson Button very much enjoyed his 24 Hours of Le Mans début last June, despite being forced to retire with just an hour of the race to go. The 2009 Formula One world champion suffered more bad luck at Silverstone last weekend when he didn’t even get the chance to take the wheel before his home crowd. He will be aiming for much better at the 6 Hours of Fuji in Japan, a country he is particularly fond of.

Jenson Button’s love of Japan goes back to 1996 when he was a talented but cash-strapped teenage kart racer. He later raced for Honda in Formula One, thanks to David Richards, winner of the 2017 Spirit of Le Mans trophy, who ran the former BAR team as well as Prodrive.

Button has always maintained a very close relationship with the Japanese manufacturer and, when he retired from Formula One, he was quite naturally taken on by Honda to compete in a NSX in the Japanese Super GT championship. As such, he has already competed on the Fuji circuit twice since May and is thus more than familiar with the track, which is to host the next round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The British driver achieved Formula One success in Japan (at Suzuka) in 2011 and will have one clear aim with the #11 BR Engineering BR1 - AER for SMP Racing on 14 October: become ‘ichiban’ – or number one, the translation of the two kanji he has tattooed on his heel.
