This Friday, 10th of December 2010 is a historic day. The new Audi R18, which will run in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and 24 Hours of Le Mans, will be unveiled tonight at Ingolstadt. We are still speculating as to the configuration of the prototype.
This is a rare event. It will be just the sixth prototype in the history of Audi at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (the R15 "plus" is an evolution of the R15), an event that the constructor will run in for the thirteenth time in 2011:
Audi R8R - 1999 (3rd)
Audi R8C - 1999 (dnf)
Audi R8 - 2000/2005 (5 wins in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005)
Audi R10 - 2006/2010 (3 wins in 2006, 2007 and 2008)
Audi R15 - 2009/2010 (1 win in 2010)
The Audi R18 might be very different from its predecessor. The rule change may have led German engineers to opt for innovative technical solutions.
There are many rumors around the engine chosen. will they retain a diesel engine? The media in Germany claim that the manufacturer would opt for petrol. The R18 could also establish a system for recovering energy, now acknowledged by the regulations.
But the question that everyone asks for the body of the new prototype. Will it open or closed? In 1999, they compared the two solutions. Since then, they have always favored the open top, unlike its rivals Peugeot.
