Back to back, Lucas di Grassi had two scares this evening: the first was a lone incident at the Indianapolis curve, the second while attempting to take his damaged Audi back to the pits. While he was rolling slowly, he did not understand Leo Roussel's maneuver when he tried to pass on the left. Falling back to the same side, the Brazilian forced the Morgan driver to go off into the grass, ending up in the wall.

Following the temporary halt of the session the accident caused, the Race Direction decided to launch the third qualifying session at 9:30 p.m., one half hour earlier than scheduled. The last session will end as planned at midnight.
