Like his fellow countryman Loïc Duval or his teammate, the German André Lotterer, the driver native of Alençon, France, raced in Japan and Super Formula. There, Tréluyer won the title in 2006, at the time it was still called Formula Nippon (Japanese singleseater). Duval and Lotterer also won the title, in 2009 and 2011 respectively.
Benoît Tréluyer: "On my previous helmet it figured a Japanese ideogram that meant 'Strong Samurai' but the painter messed up last year and wrote the one that is on André's (Lotterer) helmet, and that is the equivalent of 'winner' or 'victorious'. It's a kind of tribute to Japan, where I learned a lot about motorsports, and it's a reference that will always be on my helmet. On the other hand, in terms of the global nature of the colours, it's not my doing. I do not design, so I refer to an expert. André knows a painter in Netherland who does really great job. He has a lot of taste and it worked well for me. I started with the design of my previous helmet and asked him to update it. He showed me the current drawing that I immediately approved. My first helmet was white with a lot of blue and gradient brushstrokes. Later I did not want white, and I went to blue and yellow. This design came to be little by little until 2012. When I went from Formula Nippon to a sponsor whose main colour was red, the blue did not blend well. So I went with red which is also one of Audi's principal colours."
