Le Mans 66 – Jacky Ickx on Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles

The 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans marked Jacky Ickx's rookie participation in the legendary race. That year, the future six-time winner crossed paths with Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles. The 24 Hours Museum has created an exhibition (currently open through 23 February) dedicated to the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans and the James Mangold film "Le Mans 66" a.k.a. "Ford v Ferrari" to be released in theatres mid-November.

Six-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx describes his rookie participation in the race in 1966: "That edition was obviously important for me since it was my first participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I shared a Ford GT40 for the Essex Wire team with Jochen Neerspasch (future Mercedes motorsport manager namely for the Sauber-Mercedes, Ed.). We were forced to retire with engine troubles. I remember seeing Carroll Shelby in the garage outside the circuit where we took the cars via regular roads because back then they didn't stay at the circuit. That experience on the roads was exhilarating. At the finish, I recall seeing Ken Miles wearing his cap."

In conjunction with the release of "Le Mans 66" ("Ford v Ferrari"), the Automobile Club de l’Ouest is making available to the public its new Le Mans 66 exhibition through 23 February 2020 at the 24 Hours Museum.
