Le Mans Classic - Jan Lammers sees Le Mans in a new light

Jan Lammers is an emblematic figure of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 1988 winner, in a Jaguar XJR9 (#2) shared with Andy Wallace and Johnny Dumfries, has competed in the race no fewer than 22 times.

Jan Lammers is back at the Circuit de la Sarthe just three weeks after his last visit when he competed in the “Road To Le Mans” for LM P3s and GT3s, one of the curtain-raisers to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This time, he is driving a Spice SE92 GTP in the Group C race at Le Mans Classic. “Three weeks ago, I drove a Ligier JS P3 built in 2016. Now I’m at the wheel of a 1992 Group C car. There’s an enormous difference in the way the two cars behave on the track. Even if the Group C car is not really much heavier, you get the impression that it is.”

Despite competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans more than 20 times, Lammers is making his first appearance at Le Mans Classic. “I’d never taken part in this event before. It’s just fantastic – I love it. And there’s a Group C grid too.”

Although his career began some forty years ago and has taken him to every continent, the Dutch driver is enjoying a whole new experience at Le Mans this time round. “It’s the first time I've come to Le Mans and slept in a tent (laughs). I must admit it’s a whole new thing for me... apart from when I competed in the Paris–Dakar! When there’s no hotel and no motorhome, I’ll take a tent (laughs).”

The Group C race will take place on Saturday 9 July at 11:40.
