Victorious in 1968, 1969 and 1975, the orange and blue of Gulf Oil are part of the story of 24 hours, some of the cars are on show at Retromobile.

One of them is a darker blue than the more familiar sky blue. It marks an important chapter in the history of Gulf when they returned to the 24 Heures du Mans in 1994 with the Kremer K8, it was designed by Erwin and Manfred Kremer, two brothers and Porsche specialists, who gave us the K3 version of the 935 won 1979 24 Hours at the hands of Klaus Ludwig and the Whittington brothers.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3 litre Porsche flat 6 and enterd under the banner of Gulf Oil Racing, it qualified on the front row and finished sixth. At the wheel, were Jürgen Lässig, Robin Donovan and Derek Bell the five-time winner of the 24 hours, who had his first success in La Sarthe in 1975, driving a prototype that was also in gulf colours; the Gulf Mirage shared with Jacky Ickx.

Gulf have since returned to the traditional lighter sky blue and orange that can be seen at Retromobile in the shape of a prototype and a GT of Aston Martin who are current partners of the oil company in endurance racing.
