Opening the 24 Hours of Le Mans Karting (3 and 4 September), will present the Legend Kart racers who played the first races in France ... There are half a century!
Invented by American airmen, the first karts borrowed light aircraft wheels and a lawn mower engines. In 1956, the firm Art Ingels (a specialist in Indy cars) took the concept into production
Soon the number of karting events attracted budding American drivers, prompting many manufacturers to enter the market. McCulloch was one of them. In October 1959, this manufacturer of boat engines had two karts on the stand of the Boat Show at the Grand Palais in Paris and won popularity with the French press.
This adult 'toy' would soon revolutionize full size racing by making circuit driving accessible to all. Thus, in the '70s, future champions began to emerge from karting, including Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna. Since then, a start in karting has become almost obligatory for anyone wishing to become a racing driver.
It is this history that spectators can enjoy at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Karting on the 3rd of September this year.
The Legends are in three categories :
- Vintage ; 1956 to 1966
- Historic ; 1967 to 1977
- Classic ; 1978 to 1988
