LM P2 at Le Mans 2012-2016 (1) - Must-see competition

The 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans press conference will be held on Thursday, February 2nd. In the meantime, let’s look back at the winners in the LM P2 class since the World Endurance Championship was introduced in 2012.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is always highly anticipated for the LM P2 class as it affords the opportunity to watch the confrontation between not only teams entered in full-time in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), but also those from the European Le Mans Series and Asian Le Mans Series.

- Fourteen drivers representing seven countries have won the LM GTE Am class since 2012: Venezuela (Enzo Potolicchio in 2012), the U.K. (Ryan Dalziel and Tom Kimber-Smith in 2012; Martin Plowman in 2013; Simon Dolan, Harry Tincknell and Oliver Turvey in 2014; Richard Bradley and Matt Howson in 2015), Mexico (Ricardo Gonzalez in 2013), Belgium (Bertrand Baguette in 2013), France (Nicolas Lapierre in 2015 and 2016), Monaco (Stéphane Richelmi in 2016) and the U.S. (Gustavo Menezes in 2016).

- Winner in 2014 and 2015, with the KCMG and Signatech Alpine teams respectively, Nicolas Lapierre is the only driver to have won two LM P2 class victories since the inception of the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

- Two driver line-ups have won in the same year both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA Endurance LM P2 Drivers Trophy: Martin Plowman-Bertrand Baguette-Ricardo Gonzalez in 2013 and Nicolas Lapierre-Stéphane Richelmi-Gustavo Menezes in 2016.

- Since 2012, French team OAK Racing is the only outfit to have achieved a one-two in the LM P2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The exploit dates back to 2013, with the win for Bertrand Baguette, Martin Plowman and Ricardo Gonzalez, ahead of their teammates Olivier Pla, Alex Brundle and David Heinemeier-Hansson. In that order, that year they also won the first FIA World Endurance LM P2 Championship Drivers Trophy.

- Three teams have also won the FIA World Endurance Championship LM P2 Teams Trophy the same year they won at Le Mans: Starworks Motorsport, OAK Racing and Signatech Alpine. Winners twice in the ELMS in 2013 and 2014, Signatech Alpine joined the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2015.
