The first driver to run a Formula 1 car in 2012 may have been ... a former winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours. On 21 January, Marc Gené took the wheel of a Ferrari F2008 during a demonstration in Qatar.
Test driver for Scuderia Ferrari since 2005, exceeded 300 km/h over the 3 km route on the waterfront of Doha, the Qatari capital, ahead of the local auto show, which opened its doors Jan. 23. "I've done some demonstrations of this type before, but I had never managed to go as fast as this time," he was thrilled.
From 2007 to 2011, Marc Gene had an amazing double life between F1 testing for Ferrari, and driving a Peugeot in endurance racing. In June 2009, together with David Brabham and Alexander Wurz, he became the first Spaniard to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Then in March 2010, he also won the 12 Hours of Sebring with Wurz and Anthony Davidson. Previously, he had taken his first victory in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP in the 2007 1000 km of Monza, together with Nicolas Minassian. Despite the withdrawal of Peugeot, Marc Gené is very busy with the 2012 test programme for Ferrari (mainly in the simulator built on the site of the factory in Maranello, given the drastic limitations to private testing in Formula 1), as Ferrari is more determined than ever to remount the heights of F1. But do not despair of seeing him again in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and Le Mans, given his record with Peugeot.
Remember also that a round of the WEC is expected in Bahrain October 20, 2012 (WEC calendar Here).
