Nelson Panciatici (Alpine), fastest in LMP2 at Test Day

Nelson Panciatici, driver of Signatech Alpine Matmut's #35 Alpine A470, discusses his performance after clocking the best time in the LMP2 class in 3'28.146.

It was unexpected. You proved fastest this year and all the records in LMP2 have been beaten as the cars are now more powerful with the new regulations in effect.

"Since the beginning of the season, we've been running faster at all the circuits we've done. So we expected the same to be true here as well, at Le Mans, especially given the long straights. The difference with last year's times is impressive, but I think it'll be faster during qualifying."

Do you think you will be able to improve on your time?

"Yes, absolutely. The track was still a bit dirty and there will be increased grip on the track in two weeks. Also, my lap was not perfect today, there was some traffic."

What was your plan for this Test Day?

"Sure this is only Test Day, but it's good to show our adversaries we have speed. Today, we wanted to work on the longevity of the tires as it's a problem we've encountered since the beginning of the season. It is difficult to do triple stints much less four. We started working on that, then we went after performance level and it went well. It's good for the morale of the team."

With the time you clocked, you would have been in pole position at the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans ahead of the Audi R10 TDI driven by Rinaldo Capello. What do you think of that?

"It proves the LMP2s are very fast. The level of the teams and drivers entered in this class is very high. There are more than 25 cars entered and the fight will be great at the 24 Hours. It is going to be very interesting."

How are the new LMP2s and the LMGTE Pros getting along on the track?

"It is now much easier for us to overtake them since we come up much faster, our top speed is more important than in 2016. Meanwhile, we catch up to them more often so that's something that has to be managed now."

What is your plan between now and the big week of the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

"I'm going home since I live nearby. I'll be back on Tuesday for our session with the car at the Circuit Bugatti. Wednesday, we will conduct a big debriefing about this Test Day and begin to prepare for the sessions of 24 Hours. I'll then return home again to relax and be ready for the big week."
