Nicolas Prost and Nelson Piquet Jr (Rebellion), team-mates not rivals (video)

The crew in the #12 Rebellion R-One for this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans includes Nicolas Prost and Nelson Piquet Jr. Both of them have followed in their famous fathers’ footsteps but their careers initially took taken quite different paths.

Son of Nelson Piquet, three-time Formula One world champion (1981-83-86), Nelson Jr (who was known as Nelsinho when he started out) soon decided to follow in the footsteps of his world-famous father. He made his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut at the wheel of an Aston Martin DBR9 in 2006, aged just 20. His single-seater career took him into Formula One (he was team-mate of Fernando Alonso at Renault in 2008 and 2009) and in 2015, he became the first ever world champion in Formula-e, the FIA all-electric competition. Ten years after his first Le Mans outing, Piquet is back on the grid, this time in a prototype, the #12 Rebellion R-One.

Nicolas Prost, son of Alain, four-time Formula One world champion (1985-86-89-93), wasn’t allowed to watch Grand Prix races on television when he was a child and, instead of cars, went on to study economics in the United States. He only embarked on a racing career later on, deciding to make his way in endurance. He debuted at Le Mans in a Saleen for French outfit Oreca in 2007 and has been a stalwart of the Rebellion Racing squad (formerly Speedy Racing Team Sebah) since 2009. For his ninth Le Mans outing, he is teaming up with Nelson Piquet Jr and German Nick Heidfeld.
