On November 1, 1755, a devastating earthquake rocked Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and killed approximately 20% of the city's inhabitants. On June 25, 1960, Carlos Manuel Reis became the first Portuguese driver to take the start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The first Portuguese driver at the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans did not appear until the 28th edition. He was forced to retire in the #55 Stanguellini 740 Bialbero (photo) shared with Raymond Quilico. To-date, no Portuguese driver has ever won the race…
