Photo story of the day - Richard the first

On 20 December 1192, Richard I, known as Richard the Lionheart, was taken prisoner near Vienna, Austria. At the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours Richard Attwood and teammate Hans Herrmann claimed Porsche’s first victory in the famous endurance race.

The 1970 race was also the first without the Le Mans-style start. Drivers began the race strapped in their seats and waited for starter Dr Ferry Porsche (son of the company’s founder) to wave the green flag. It was a good omen for the marque, who managed to take the upper hand in the head-to-head with Ferrari. The weather played a significant role too and the Italian works cars were put out of the game due to torrential rain.
