After renewing all drivers from last year, Dr. Ullrich needed to recruit a crew for a fourth car entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The head of Audi Motorsport set his sights on Loïc Duval, Oliver Jarvis and Marco Bonanomi.

Marco Bonanomi was born on the 12th of March 1985 in Lecco that lies at the foot of the Italian Alps. After a promising start in karting, the Italian migrated to cars and became development driver for Volkswagen in 2007 which is of course part of the same family as Audi. In 2010, the man from Lombardy emerged from the shadows by finishing second in the Italian GT Championship with Filipe Albuquerque. It was a move toward the DTM for Bonanomi, but he persevered in endurance racing.

His performances at the wheel of the Audi R8 LMS won him a contract with the Audi Motorsport reserve driver programme for the R18. In this role, he participated in testing, including the test day of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2011. In only ten laps, he managed to navigate the 13.629 km Sarthe circuit in 3'35 "599, less than eight seconds off the best time of Tom Kristensen. He probably didn't realise it at the time, but the young Bonanomi had just earned himself a drive for the 24 Hours Le Mans 2012. In June, he teams-up with Oliver Jarvis and Mike Rockenfeller.
