Jota Sport's team manager, Sam Hignett, had a big smile on his face the evening of the third round of the European Le Mans Series, which took place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. Indeed, the No. 38 Gibson 015S-Nissan was on fire all weekend!
Third ELMS round, first win and now leader in the championship. Everything is looking good for Jota Sport!
"Yes, everything is going well! It was good to have scored this victory at the Red Bull Ring as it was the first win for us at this circuit. We did not make it easy for ourselves at that race, but the drivers were very fast. Filipe (Albuquerque) clocked the best time, Harry (Tincknell) clinched pole position and we won the race."
Are you disappointed by your result at the 24 Hours of Le Mans since you were the defending 2014 winner?
"Of course, we are disappointed. It's hard to accept finishing in second place, so close to the winners (48 seconds from KCMG's winning Oreca, editor's note). The part that forced us to make a pit stop for repairs at the very beginning of the race and cost us three laps was new, a part that costs five euros. It's just horrible! But it's something that can happen to anyone. Once again, the drivers and mechanics did great work. One can always look back and go 'what if' but what is certain is we had the pace to win! Four or five times, Oliver Turvey and Mitch Evans clocked the fastest lap during the race in LM P2."
You had a driver debuting at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year named Mitch Evans. Are you satisfied with him?
"Mitch was simply amazing! He is young, he had just celebrated his 21st birthday right before Le Mans, and had always raced in single-seaters (Mitch Evans is currently entered in the GP2 Series, editor's note). He has invested himself in something totally different and has handled it very well."
There are now two rounds remaining in the ELMS, at Le Castellet and at Estoril. How is the rest of your season looking?
"I think we will do pretty well at the last two circuits. Our car was once again certified by Gibson. It is better than the old Zytek that we had previously, especially in terms of the aerodynamic drag and speed in the straights. Le Castellet should be harder for us, even though our top speed has improved. Estoril should work well for our car. It will be interesting to see how the Oreca 05 and BR 01 behave."
Is your objective still to have the ELMS title?
"Our goal at the beginning of the season was all about the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, we failed by a small margin. Now we need to focus on the last two rounds because our second goal is the 2015 ELMS title."
What will you be up to in 2016? Will you keep the same chassis?
"We will keep the same chassis next year. We are very satisfied with it and no new car is coming out in 2016, so in so far as we can keep up with the Oreca 05 and the BR 01, we will be in the fight along with them. On the other hand, for 2017, we will indeed have a new chassis!"
