Intercontinental Le Mans Cup - Autosport 1000km of Silverstone

Silverstone is no doubt a legendary circuit. A former Royal Air Force base during the Second World War, it hosted the first Grand Prix in the history of Formula 1 in 1950, and sixty years later it is hosting the first race of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

Among the drivers at the start of the Autosport 1000km of Silverstone, are six former F1 drivers.

Pole position holder Allan McNish is much happier behind the wheel of his Audi R15 than that of a Toyota Formula 1 car, since his only Grand Prix of Great Britain in 2002  resulted in a retirement.

Giancarlo Fisichella and Jean Alesi (right photo above, with Toni Vilander), the AF Corse duo in LM GT2, both have 200 Grands Prix starts to their name. They have respectively 13 and 14 participations at Silverstone, with the best results three second places (1994-1995-1997) and two fourth places (2005-2006). Their team mate Gimmi Bruni finished 16th for his only participation in the British Grand Prix in 2003.

Not forgetting Nigel Mansell, the hero of Silverstone, winning three British Grand Prix on this circuit in 1987, 1991 and 1992. He is still recovering from his misadventure in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and finally withdrew from the 1000 km, leaving his sons Leo and Greg to defend family honour in this great circuit's inaugural race in the ILMC.
