SMP Racing and the BR Engineering BR1 a year on

Russian outfit SMP Racing first put the BR Engineering BR1 through its paces during a 3-day test at the Aragon circuit in Spain a year ago now. Since then the non-hybrid LMP1 has earned two FIA World Endurance Championship podium places.

This time last year, SMP Racing began testing a new car. The team had selected the BR Engineering BR1, the new non-hybrid LMP1 prototype, for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA WEC. Vitaly Petrov, Mikhail Aleshin, Matevos Isaakyan and Egor Orudzhev clocked over 100 problem-free laps and the test was therefore pronounced conclusive.

Since then, SMP Racing has entered two BR Engineering BR1-AERs in five of the eight rounds in the current FIA WEC Super Season. Stéphane Sarrazin and Egor Orudzhev (#17) finished third overall at the 6 Hours of Silverstone and Mikhail Aleshin, Vitaly Petrov and Jenson Button took the same place at the 6 Hours of Shanghai with the #11. Thanks to those results, the team lies third in LMP1 in the WEC, behind Toyota Gazoo Racing and Rebellion Racing.

The next race for the BR Engineering BR1s is the 1000 Miles of Sebring on 15 March, when two new recruits, Sergey Sirotkin and Brendon Hartley will take the wheel. Hartley is to share the #11 with Mikhail Aleshin and Vitaly Petrov while Sirotkin has a seat in the #17 with Stéphane Sarrazin and Egor Orudzhev.
