Starting Grid
At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a provisional starting grid is determined one hour after the end of qualifying, whereas the final starting grid is established one hour after the end of the warm-up.
Pole position goes to the car of the driver who clocked the best time overall across the three qualifying sessions of Wednesday, June 10th and Thursday, June 11th. This car will start from the first row at the left side of the track.
On the starting grid, the cars are positioned in a two-by-two formation in the order of the best times by the fastest driver across the qualifying sessions.
In LM P2 and LM GTE Am, the driver taking the start of the race must mandatorily be the driver who set the best time of the driver line-up, all qualifying sessions considered. So, it is only after the qualifying sessions that the identity of the driver who will take the start is known in the LM P2 and LM GTE Am classes.
On the other hand, in LM P1 and LM GTE Pro, the name of the driver who will take the start must mandatorily be declared as of the administrative checks. The name can be changed at the latest within the half hour following the end of the qualifying sessions, but a penalty, at the discretion of the Marshals, can be given to the competitor making the request.
Note that at the other FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) events, the average of the two best times (the best for each driver) constitutes the time in establishing the starting grid.
