Upon arrival in La Sarthe, Toyota was the favourite after its winning campaign in the U.K. and in Belgium in FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Unfortunately, the German manufacturer's experience and a team galvanized by the challenge were right in the motivation of their Japanese counterpart, while the Porsche team had growing pains.
Audi finally won with the new generation R18 e-tron quattro in the hands of the trio Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer, and even achieved a one-two with the second place finish of Lucas di Grassi, who had the heavy burden to succeed after the Allan McNish's retirement, Loïc Duval and Tom Kristensen, the nine-time winner of the 24 Hours.
