Since 1923, date of the first running of the greatest endurance race in the world, some 3500 drivers have started the event. It was more than time that the Drivers’ Club set up in 1953, but given fresh impetus since 2007 under the drive of Henri Pescarolo and Gérard Larrousse, had its own clubhouse worthy of the men (and women) who have written the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours.
It’s now a reality in the Singher grandstand, the oldest building on the circuit at the end of the pits straight.
The Drivers’ Club now has a top-class clubhouse where all the former Le Mans runners are received in a home from home where they can continue to live their passion and talk about it.
It was inaugurated this afternoon by Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, Gérard Larrousse, president of the Drivers’ Club and Henri Pescarolo, honorary president of the club in the presence of Jean-Claude Boulard, Mayor of Le Mans, and Véronique Rivron, vice- president of the Sarthe General Council.
Some twenty former greats were also on hand including Emanuele Pirro, 5-time winner of the event, Jürgen Barth first in 1977, Brian Redman 15 starts between 1967 and 1989, Yves Courage from Le Mans, 10 starts including six at the wheel of his own cars, as well as Francis Canal and his son Julien, two men who symbolize the passion for Le Mans handed down from father to son.
