The historic Copenhagen Grand Prix attracts crowds eager to cheer on their local Le Mans champions. For a country of five million, they have more than their fair share of successful racing drivers, the most famous being Mr Le Mans himself, Tom Kristensen.
The Audi ambassador physical trainer was in Copenhagen to support his younger brother Jacob, also a racing driver and familiar with 24-hour races.
Some things run in the family. Aston Martin works driver Nicki Thiim was there to support his father Kurt, who raced Le Mans in 1991. Nicki came fifth in LM GTE Pro this year, partnered with fellow Dane Marco Sørensen. In Copenhagen though, Thiim shared a car with Jan Struve, owner of Young Driver AMR.
The Aston Martin pair were up against their main rivals at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche driver Michael Christensen and Corvette driver Jan Magnussen. The two Audi works drivers, Loïc Duval and André Lotterer, both Le Mans winners, lined up in the Royal Pro/Am, as did three-time winner Dindo Capello. He and Kristensen did well to come out of retirement for the occasion: they took second and third place respectively, behind Duval.
Jan Magnussen, who raced Lime Rock on 22-23 July returns stateside this weekend for the Road America round of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Michael Christensen, Nicki Thiim, Marco Sørensen, Loïc Duval and André Lotterer will also cross the ocean in September for the 6 Hours of Mexico, fifth round in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
