The Le Mans Classic wins the trophy for 2016 Motorsport Event of the Year

As it did in 2014, the Le Mans Classic - which takes place every two years and brings together cars that have made history in endurance and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans - has been awarded the prize for Motorsport Event of the Year at the International Historic Motoring Awards in London last week.

Each edition of the Le Mans Classic beats attendance records and 2016 was no exception to the rule with 123,000 spectators and more than 500 cars and 1,000 drivers, including 10 previous 24 Hours of Le Mans winners thrilled to be at the wheel of the cars of their former glory.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans was also indirectly honoured by the prize for Restoration of the Year, awarded to the RK Motors company based in Charlotte, North Carolina for the restoration of the Ford GT40 winner at Le Mans in 1966. The #2 P/1046 GT 40 underwent a two-year makeover to return to its original state. After its victory, in the hands of Bruce McLaren, the car developed by Caroll Shelby and entered by the Shelby-American Inc. team was modified to compete in the 1967 Rolex 24 at Daytona. Unfortunately, the #1046 chassis was involved in an accident and the car then changed hands several times before appearing at the Le Mans Classic in 2006 for the 40th anniversary of its win.

The Le Mans Classic will be back in 2018 for its ninth edition!
