The Project 1 Motorsport team's 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans (video)

Project 1 Motorsport debuted in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) this year. After finishing ninth in the LMGTE class at the opening round of the 2018-2019 Super Season at Spa-Francorchamps, the team took its first start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans!

Project 1 Motorsport was formed in 1993 by Hans-Bernd Kamps and Jörg Michaels. Initially christened Tolimit Motorsport, the team was renamed Project 1 Motorsport in 2013 before going on to win 18 Teams and Drivers titles in Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and Porsche SuperCup (a championship that serves as a lead-in to Formula 1 Grand Prix).

This year, the German team decided to move up a level and compete in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with a Porsche 911 RSR entrusted to head driver Jörg Bergmeister, Patrick Lindsey and Egidio Perfetti. After finishing ninth at Spa-Francorchamps, Project 1 Motorsport finished 34th overall seventh in LMGTE Am at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In a brief interview after the race, Jörg Bergmeister admitted the driver line-up "experienced quite a few highs and lows. At one point things were looking rather promising for us and we weren't out of reach of second place in LMGTE Am. Unfortunately, we had a mechanical problem that pushed us back to seventh position. We made up time and got to third place, but then had another problem an hour and a half from the checkered flag (brakes, Ed.) that kicked us back to seventh. It's too bad, we were on pace to claim a podium finish. But, I would like to congratulate my teammates and the entire team for their first experience with this race."

The German driver was certain success was soon to come and he wasn't wrong. At the third round of the WEC season at Silverstone, the trio reached the third step on the podium; and even better, at Fuji (the most recent race), Project 1 Motorsport won its class!
