Thomas Laurent (Rebellion): "Four things can make or break you at Le Mans."
Winner in the LMP2 class and second overall in 2017 with Jackie Chan DC Racing, this year Thomas Laurent will take the wheel of an LMP1 for the first time on behalf of Swiss team Rebellion Racing. This rising endurance racing star native of France gives his thoughts on Test Day and lists key points for the 86th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
What did you think of Test Day?
"A lot of good things. Aside from a few small electrical hiccups, we didn't experience any mechanical problems. That's really good. We worked diligently on the car's settings in preparation for the race in order to reduce tire wear. We juggled between two sets of tires. We've made the car very enjoyable to drive even after three or four stints. I finished Test Day with tires that had done what amounted to two hours and 15 minutes of racing and they were still good. That's a great sign for the race."
"The car is extremely well-built. The team's mechanics are highly competent and are doing their best to avoid any kinks."

The car is relatively new, is it surprising not to have encountered any mechanical problems?
"No, it's not surprising coming from ORECA (the French constructor designed the Rebellion R13, Ed.). I've been working with them for three years now and as usual they've done excellent work. The car is extremely well-built. The team's mechanics are highly competent and are doing their best to avoid any kinks. It's perfect for a 24-hour race."
Last year, you participated in the race at the wheel of an LMP2 prototype. This year you're moving up into LMP1. Thoughts?
"It all happens on the track. Driving an LMP1 makes you feel like you're dominating all the other classes. It's kind of a cool feeling. You very rarely get overtaken, and when it does happen, it's only by a Toyota. We'll see what it's really like during the race."

What do you think will make a difference in the race?
"Four things can make or break you at Le Mans. The drivers simply cannot make a mistake on the track. Tire management is absolutely crucial if you want to go all the way, and you have to some back-ups in case of a flat or if your race strategy calls for new ones at the end of the race. Pit stops also play a pivotal role. You cannot waste time during driver changes. If you don't need to return the car to the pit, it can only help your cause."

In an ideal world, one's passion, hard work and commitment would guarantee success. But, talent also plays a complex and crucial role in winning. Olivier Gendebien's track record is proof positive of that fact. Though he never considered himself a professional, he nevertheless built a career that countless great dri...
