Today’s Photo Story -Edouard Probst, the first Swiss driver to race the 24 Hours of Le Man

According to the famous Swiss legend, a bailiff forced William Tell to shoot an apple off his son’s head with his crossbow on 18 November 1307. On 26 May 1923, Swiss driver Edouard Probst took to the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Berliet.

Out of the 66 drivers on the entry list for the first ever 24-hour race to be held in Le Mans, there were no fewer than 59 French contestants. Among the remaining seven, there were four Belgians, a Canadian, one Brit and a Swiss driver. He drove the #12 Berliet shown in our photograph. The first Swiss to win the iconic race was Marcel Fässler in 2011. Since then, the Audi driver has taken two other Le Mans victories while his fellow countryman scored a fourth win for Switzerland this year with Porsche.
