Today’s Photo Story - Mercedes wins Le Mans 24 Hours

On this day in 1900, the first ever Mercedes was delivered to German-born businessman Emil Jellinek.

Jellinek commissioned Paul Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach to design a racing car that was to be named Mercedes, after his daughter. He won several races in the south of France and registered the Mercedes trademark in 1902. Fifty years later, the German marque won the the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a 300 SL (pictured), one of only 17 cars to finish the race that year (forty retired). The win for Hermann Lang and Fritz Riess remains the only outright Le Mans victory in the history of the marque.
