Today's Photo Story - Audi wins with a diesel engine for the first time at Le Mans (2006)

On January 6, 1930, Clessis Cumming installed a diesel engine in a Packard and completed an 800-mile journey between Indianapolis and New York. On June 18, 2006, Audi won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel engine for the very first time in the history of the legendary race.

Though a diesel engine car took the start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as early as 1950 (a Delettrez forced to retire), it would take more than 50 years for another to win the race. It was a test drive that turned into a master stroke for the marque with the Audi R10 thanks to Frank Biela, Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner.
