Today's Photo Story - First appearance of the Ford GT40 at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans

On December 2, 1927, the Ford Model A - the production of which would end in 1932 - was officially for sale after 18 years of loyal service. On June 20, 1964, the Ford GT40 participated for the first time in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The mastery of engineer Roy Lunn, to whom the Ford GT40 project was entrusted, remained untarnished though the first appearance of the stunning American car at Le Mans, for the free practice sessions in 1964, ended bitterly with two incidents. All while proving fast in-race, the Ford GT40s were forced to retire as a result of gearbox troubles. Ford would have to wait until 1966 to triumph, with the first of four consecutive wins for the Ford GT40 at Le Mans.
