Today's Photo Story - Resurfacing prior to the 1926 24 Hours of Le Mans…

November 26, 1836 marked the death of John Loudon McAdam, inventor of a new process called "macadamisation" for building roads with a smooth hard surface. In 1926, tarmac began making its appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit.

Though certain stretches of the famous Mulsanne Straight were paved before the first edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1923, it would not be until 1926 for it to be fully covered with a coating that incorporates a tar-bitumen emulsion with calcareous chips. Macadam started being used in the early 1930s throughout circuit and center lines were added.
