Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps - Toyota in pole position

The verdict is in after the very first qualifying session of the 2018-2019 Super Season of the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC): the #7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid (LMP1) and the #67 Ford GT (LMGTE Pro) are in pole position. The Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium tomorrow is sure to be highly competitive!

LMP1: Toyota one-two

The pole was clinched by the #7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid shared by Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi with a time of 1:54:583. The Japanese car qualified ahead of its sister car - the #8 driven by Fernando Alonso, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima - that trailed by only three-tenths of a second. The fastest non-hybrid car was the #1 Rebellion R13-Gibson shared by André Lotterer, Bruno Senna and Neel Jani, less than two seconds behind the Toyotas. Rebellion Racing's second car, the #3, qualified in fourth position and the #11 BR Engineering BR1-AER rounded out the top 5!

LMP2

Signatech Alpine Matmut's #36 Alpine A470-Gibson driven by Nicolas Lapierre, Pierre Thiriet and André Negrão qualified ahead of the #26 ORECA 07-Gibson fielded by G-Drive Racing, a competitor in the European Le Mans Series participating in preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Jackie Chan DC Racing's two ORECA 07-Gibsons. Two hundredths of a second separate the first two cars.

Several incidents took place during the LMP session. The first red flag was brought out only four minutes into the session. One of the two BR Engineering BR1-AERs, the #17 driven by Stéphane Sarrazin, stopped at the edge of the track after the Raidillon. The second red flag was waved, just a few minutes later, after an incident for DragonSpeed's #10 BR Engineering BR1-Gibson driven at the time by Pietro Fittipaldi. Unfortunately, the car was seriously damaged and the driver was helicoptered to the Liège hospital.

LMGTE Pro: Ford one-two

The two Ford GTs fielded by Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK left their rivals with no room for error. The #67 driven by Andy Priaulx, Harry Tincknell and Tony Kanaan proved fastest (2:12:947) ahead of its sister car, the #66 shared by Stefan Mücke, Olivier Pla and Billy Johnson. The two Americans qualified ahead of the two official Porsche 911 RSRs, the #91 and the #92. The top three cars are all within one-tenth of a second! The race promises to be spectacular, and let's not forget 17 cars will be on the grid in the LMGTE Pro class at next month's 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 16th and 17th (tickets).

LMGTE Am

The session was dominated by Dempsey Proton Racing's #77 Porsche 911 RSR driven by Christian Ried, Matt Campbell and Julien Andlauer. The #98 Aston Martin Vantage clocked the second fastest time and the #56 Porsche 911 RSR of Team Project - a team new to the FIA WEC - qualified in third position. In this class, the gaps are extrememly small, the top two cars are separated by only two-thousandths of a second!

The start of the race will be given tomorrow, Saturday, May 5th at 1:30 p.m. local time (12:30 in the U.K.). Especially given the cars fielded in the various classes are so close, the Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps is not to be missed!
