Though we won't be seeing one of endurance's overall winners this season since Nico Hülkenberg is tied up with his commitment in F1, his two teammates will in fact be present in Texas, with the same official Porsche team in GT, but separately. Nick Tandy won in the GTLM class at the last two races with Patrick Pilet, whose engine went up in smoke at Le Mans. The other, Earl Bamber, reached the second step on the podium in Virginia in the second official 911.
Though the LM P2 class will not be represented, the LM GTE Pro and Am classes indeed will. The first by way of the official Corvette Racing team, winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans despite the drawback of having only one car at the start. The second C7.R had to declare forfeit at the practice following an incident caused by a mechanical problem. The winning driver line-up, Oliver Gavin-Tommy Milner has won in the American championship, as has their teammate (of one week) Jordan Taylor who will race in a Corvette DP for the team of his father Wayne Taylor, former class winner at the 24 Hours. Giancarlo Fisichella, official Ferrari driver and two-time class winner at Le Mans in 2012 and 2014, finished third in the preceding round in Virginia with Risi Competizione, the spot he held on the podium at Le Mans in June with AF Corse.
Lastly, third in the LM GTE Am class at Le Mans this year, Townsend Bell and Bill Sweedler reached the top step on the podium in their class in Virginia for the first time since the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona.
The eight drivers will be at the start on Saturday at 11:35 a.m. local time (5:35 p.m. in the U.K.) for the two-hour, 40-minute Lone Star Le Mans race.
