Since its first race in 1923 the 24 Hours of Le Mans has drawn almost all the automotive manufacturers in the world. But only a very small group have achieved the feat of finishing in the top three places.
In 1926 Lorraine-Dietrich were first, but soon, other marques managed the 1-2-3; Bentley (1929), Alfa Romeo (1933) and Jaguar (1957). Then came the era of the great duels. Ferrari owned the podium between 1961 and 1965. Ford in 1966, then the Porsche in 1970, 1979 and 1982 to 1986. After the victory of the 905 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1992 Peugeot locked out the podium in 1993. Finally Audi 'sarrival marked a revival in endurance racing, and they scored several 'triple' finishes; 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010 and 2012.
In ninety years of history, many manufacturers have contested the 24 hours, but Porsche unquestionably the most numerically significant, with a record number of cars involved (500), most wins (16) and the number of 1-2-3 finishes (7).
This year, Audi have entered three new cars for the 24 Hours of Le Mans that will take place on the 22nd and 23rd of June. Dr. Ullrich aims to repeat the result of 2012 match Ferrari in its number of triple finishes (6). Their superb result in the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps may be a sign of what may happen in June.
